There is no denying that some Berkshire County residents are still struggling as the pandemic has cost many people their jobs. As a result, a number of people in the Berkshires have yet to return to pre-pandemic income levels. Also, as we have heard and seen regularly lately, affordable housing has become an issue for many Berkshires residents to the point that some people have to drive from outside the county to work here.
It’s not entirely disastrous, as there have been a number of local businesses that not only are hiring, but really need to fill their vacancies so they can get back to providing full service to the community. with the resumption of the offer of normal hours of operation to the public. During the pandemic, many businesses in the Berkshires have had to reduce their hours of operation due to lack of active staff.
That said, the Berkshires are a great place to work, live, play, and raise a family, but we always hear about how Berkshire County could use more jobs with decent pay and opportunities for growth. We continue to see young people leaving the community in search of careers that may not be available here. However, if some of these jobs were available in our county, the young people would stay and the business as well as the community would thrive at a higher level. At least that’s what I’ve been told.
Curious to know what the people of Berkshire County think, a few weeks ago I went to one of the local Facebook groups and simply posed the question: What kinds of jobs would you like to see in the Berkshires? I received a number of responses and chose to include 16 wishlist items here. So, let’s take a look at what locals want to see (and see more of) in terms of employment options in the Berkshires. These are in no particular order except that the first three photos that depict industry/manufacturing were the consistently most popular response from members of the Facebook group.
