Activision Blizzard’s New ‘Diversity Space Tool’ Used For CoD And Overwatch 2 Stuns Some Fans

Activision Blizzard has announced a new tool that will be used by its game developers with future game releases from the company.

The “Diversity Space Tool” ranks characters across the network based on diversity. It has already been used in two of Activision Blizzard’s most popular home games, Surveillance and Call of Duty.

The Diversity Space Tool is a measuring device that would guide developers to help them determine if their character traits and distribution are diverse enough to represent inclusiveness. This Activision Blizzard tool will measure characteristics such as physical appearance, ethnicity, cognitive abilities, and many other traits.

This diversity tool was created by King and MIT Game Labs to establish and follow rules for how characters should be thought out and created.

However, due to the nature of the new tool, it receives a mixed reaction from its audience. Some even became uncomfortable with the weirdness of creating a tool to measure diversity instead of talking to real human beings.

Activision’s Blizzard Diversity Space Tool

Activision Blizzard employees have long called for the company to be more inclusive. Company employees have also taken legal action regarding the inclusiveness divide they feel inside the system.

This is the first public decision Activision Blizzard has made since the company’s board of directors pledged in December 2021 to be more transparent about how it addresses diversity issues in its video games.

According to GameSpot, women make up just 24% of Activision’s workforce, while 36% of the company’s US-based employees identify as being from an underrepresented ethnic minority.

In the press release, the diversity figures were deemed unsatisfactory and the company pledged to strengthen diversity not only among its employees but also throughout its video game universes. The new ranking system, which is a tool for Diversity Space, was developed specifically for this purpose.

Activision Editorial Content Director Eric Alt used Activision Blizzard’s official blog website to write an explainer for the feature on May 12. The organization confirmed in the statement that it has worked with MIT to develop software that addresses unconscious bias.

As Dexterto reported, Jacqueline Chomatas, King Globalization Project Manager, said, “The Diversity Space tool is a measurement tool to help identify the diversity of a set of character traits and, in turn , the diversity of this character and her cast compared to the ‘norm’.”

Mixed reactions for the diversity tool

Blizzard Entertainment, known for the video game World of Warcraft, and KING, known for the hit game Candy Crush, are all subsidiaries of Activision. It has been reported that

According to Activision Blizzard, teams working on video game development have already started beta testing the new tool. The tool was used by the teams responsible for developing the new Call of Duty: Vanguard team.

Additionally, the tool was put to the test by Blizzard’s Overwatch 2 team, who reportedly had first impressions of the tool that were on par with those of the Call of Duty team.

However, some have criticized the new tool. As reported by 2KUTV, Fanbyte News editor Imran Khan said Activision’s diversity tool is uncomfortable and slightly dystopian.

Khan did not hold back on his thoughts on the feature in a Twitter post. He considers it absurd to need to develop a tool to identify diversity instead of hiring designers from diverse ethnic backgrounds.

Khan said: “Like, it’s not – bad – There’s no apparent malice in it. But you have to realize that creating a tool when you can just hire various designers and listen to them is kind of crazy. .”
