A new tool from LinkedIn lets you find the top skills employers want candidates to have for almost any job.
Additionally, if there is a skill you need and don’t have, the tool will direct you to the resources available to develop the skill.
LinkedIn’s “Future of Skills” data tool will show you how requirements for jobs have changed from 2015 to 2021.
According to a recent analysis by LinkedIn, the best skills for a given role have changed by about 25% from 2015 to today, and could increase by up to 40% by 2025.
Here’s how to use LinkedIn’s new tool to uncover the skills you need to be a top candidate on your next job application.
Alternatively, this tool can be useful for keeping your skills up to date, increasing your value in your current role.
LinkedIn Future of Skills Tool
To start, move towards the Future Of Skills tool and scroll all the way down until you get to the section shown in the screenshot below.
You can search for top skills by industry or job title, and then you can filter those results by country.
The tool will present the main skills needed today as well as a comparison of the main skills needed in 2015.
You will also get an analysis of:
- How much the best skills have changed
- Which of the main skills are new?
- Which of the best skills are the same
- Which of the main skills have increased or decreased in importance
Here is what the Future Of Skills tools show for the job title of Search engine optimization specialist in the United States.
As you can see in the example above, a significant number of the main skills needed are marked as New.
This means that more employers are looking for candidates with these skills today than they were in 2015.
If you want to increase your chances of getting hired as an SEO specialist this year, here are the skills you need to have.
Let’s say you don’t have all the skills. Maybe you have almost all of them but are unfamiliar with SEMrush, for example.
What you can do now is click on SEMrush and LinkedIn will take you to a selection of relevant learning courses.
All LinkedIn users get a one-month free trial to access all learning courses available on the website.
After that, there is a monthly fee to take the courses, or you can pay for a single course and access it anytime.
LinkedIn’s Future Of Skills tool is a comprehensive resource of the best skills candidates should possess in almost any industry or position.
Employers can also use it if they are hiring for a certain position and don’t know what skills to look for.
This is perhaps the most valuable collection of data on top job skills that LinkedIn has made available.
LinkedIn regularly publishes annual reports on the best jobs and professional skills, but they never include as much data as you can find using the Future Of Skills tool.
