Role Profile

The Exchange is looking for an ambitious, conscientious and dynamic Director of Sales and Marketing to increase awareness of The Exchange and what we do, attracting visitors to the building and helping to achieve our sales targets ambitious, but achievable. The immediate focus will be on building markets for The Bookstore (our restaurant/deli), our craft retail (“TEX”) offering and continuing our events program.

You will join The Exchange at an exciting time. We are a young and growing social enterprise, focused on craftsmanship and community empowerment, with a growing and supportive team, and a growing number of local and more distant supporters. Each team has its own defined areas of responsibility, usually covering more than one key area, in order to complete projects and engage throughout the year. The Sales and Marketing role is itself cross-disciplinary, seeking both sales and marketing experience and responsibility. The candidate will be able to manage more than one project at a time and be on the lookout for new opportunities for organizational growth. This is a new role for The Exchange, so the candidate should be open for the role to fit the needs of the organization.

Duties + Responsibilities:

Press & Communications

  • Be the guardian of The Exchange brand, ensuring that all staff and volunteers involved in communications can effectively communicate our purpose, philosophy and values, providing staff/volunteer training where necessary
  • Development of relations with the local and sectoral press, identification of press articles and writing of press releases
  • Lead the management of the website, ensuring that brand communications are delivered effectively, information is up to date and the website functions well
  • Act as an ambassador for The Exchange at internal or external events

Marketing

  • Lead the development and implementation of marketing strategies and plans across the organization, including bookstore, catering, retail, venue rentals and events
  • Lead regular social media marketing (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Linkedin) and lists for The Exchange/The Bookstore, liaising with other staff and the graphic designer, using volunteers as appropriate, and in accordance to Exchange identity
  • Develop online audiences for Exchange and Bookstore social platforms, and explore the need for/introduce TEX platforms
  • Lead the development of digital and print marketing materials, alongside the graphic designer, operations and events manager and co-directors
  • Develop marketing/social media partnerships to increase reach and audience
  • Lead the creation of an organizational image bank, organize and deliver photo shoots as needed

Sales

  • Work with Co-Managers, Operations and Events Manager and Restaurant Manager to increase on-site sales, particularly Bookstore/Delicatessen and Retail
  • Develop online sales platforms, particularly for retail and workshops
  • Identify a program for and represent The Exchange in external craft markets
  • Retail purchases, sourcing of new products and suppliers in line with the TEX philosophy

Reports/other

  • Timely monitoring and evaluation of work, reporting on the effectiveness of campaigns and strategies to co-directors, against agreed KPIs
  • Effective management of the annual marketing budget
  • Any other duties reasonably required

Personal specification

Essential:

  • A minimum of 2 years of marketing experience, ideally in a community/cultural environment
  • Experience in budget management and good digital skills
  • Experience with digital content and social media, including scheduling programs such as Hootsuite
  • Writing skills
  • Strong understanding of KPIs and drawing insights from them for broader reporting and business actions
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment, with an ability to manage numerous projects with competing deadlines and priorities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Highly organized, with good time management skills
  • Motivated
  • Adaptable, with a willingness to learn
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Computer literacy – Excel, Word, Mac and Windows OS
  • Experience working both independently and in a collaborative, team-oriented environment
  • Passion for community and culture, and commitment to exchange goals

Desirable:

  • Experience with a camera or willingness to learn
  • Ability to execute, track and analyze campaigns
  • Experience with Photoshop, Squarespace and Mailchimp
  • Volunteer management experience
  • Experience with design packages
  • Understanding of GDPR requirements and processes
