Soulframe is the fantasy spin-off of the long-running online action RPG Warframe

A new free-to-play game from the studio behind online sci-fi ARPG Warframe was teased during the TennoCon 2022 live stream today, bringing the action MMORPG’s shenanigans into the realm of fantasy. Called Soulframe, we don’t know much about it yet, but the developers at Digital Extremes have shown off some first images. Swap out your space pants for your wizard robes before watching the very first trailer below.

Fantasy MMORPG Soulframe is the new mystery game from Warframe developers Digital Extremes.

A list of brands for Soulframe was spotted in May and noted on Reddit, but this is the first confirmation that it really exists and is a low-key thing that isn’t part of Warframe. During the reveal, Soulframe Creative Director Geoff Crookes said:

“With the world-building and thematic elements of Soulframe, we’re really looking to go back to our childhood favorites and draw inspiration from the elaborate fantasy worlds we fell in love with growing up. Our team is really interested in this idea of nature colliding with humanity and we will be exploring a lot of these themes through our own lens while playing with ideas of restoration and exploration.

Digital Extremes is undergoing something of a revamp to accommodate the growth of its stable of games. Director of Community and Live Operations Rebecca Ford will become Warframe’s new creative director, taking over from Steve Sinclair. The Warframe vet will work on Soulframe. Ford’s growing influence has apparently already been felt in the development of the upcoming The Duviri Paradox expansion and the Veilbreaker update, the latest of which was announced on today’s stream.

Soulframe hasn’t been in the oven long enough to know when it will be ready. It’s highly likely that the new game will come to Steam and consoles like Warframe did before it. Whether Soulframe will be a simple repurposing of Warframe’s formula into a gestalt, Gandalf-esque form or something very different remains to be seen, but we’ll keep you posted.
